Bio: Donna L. Washington, MD, MPH, FACP, is an accomplished General Internist and health services researcher, renowned for her expertise in addressing the healthcare needs of vulnerable and underserved populations, with a particular focus on racial/ethnic minority and women Veterans. She holds multiple positions, including Director of the VHA Health Equity-Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) at VHA’s national partnered evaluation center. Additionally, she serves as the Women’s Health Focused Research Area Lead for the VA HSR&D Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation, Implementation, and Policy (CSHIIP), Director of Health Services Research for the VA Greater Los Angeles Department of Medicine, and is a professor in residence at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine.
Dr. Washington has made significant contributions to the field through her work on health care access, quality, and equity for marginalized populations. Her research has directly influenced national VA policies, leading to improvements in service delivery for women, and has played a crucial role in shaping the VA’s strategic plan for enhancing health equity. Her dedication and expertise have garnered recognition, including impressive accolades such as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Amos Medical Faculty Development Program award, the 2015 Society of General Internal Medicine’s Herbert Nickens Award, the 2019 Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust Award, and the 2020 Under Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Services Research – the highest honor a VA health services researcher can receive.
